. i met the president of the united states, barack obama. [ cheers and applause ] thank you. thank you very much. you can touch me afterwards. it was incredible. >> jimmy: tell him i said hi. >> i went over there, and, you know, you kind of anticipate what you're going to say to the president when you meet him, and he comes up to me, and he shakes my hand, and he looks at me and he goes, "so, how are you feeling?" and all i could say was, "much better now, mr. president." [ light laughter ] i'm not sure what the hell the implication of that was. >> jimmy: yes. >> like i was having an awful day at the white house prior to that moment. >> jimmy: yeah, exactly. well, what happened? >> i hate myself. i hate myself so much. >> jimmy: oh, my gosh. >> but it was -- it was pretty -- >> jimmy: really, but he watched -- watched and saw the show? >> no, that's a bold-faced lie. >> jimmy: okay. very good, okay. . volunteer events will be held in all 50 states and the obamas and bidens will attend a service fair on the national mall featuring 100 volunteer organizations. nbc's special correspondent chelsea clinton is the honorary chair of that event. chelsea, nice to see you. good morning. >> nice to see you, matt. good morning. >> i know michelle obama said back in 2009 at the first inaugural, the national service day was her favorite part of the entire event. i also know she and her husband, and the bidens and you would like to grow that event. how do you go about doing it? >> oh, we're so excited. we have events in every state. we have more than 2,000 different events. there will be more than 50,000 volunteer opportunities for people to take advantage of. and on the mall alone, as you mentioned, there will be more than 100 organizations participating in seven different events in what we believe to be the largest service event ever taking place in our nation's capital. >> i was looking, the world giving index shows the united states among the top ten countries with the most generous citizen

know many states have modified their background check laws since then making the president's claim very difficult to prove. la lastly mr. obama said this. >> in the month since 20 precious children and six brave adults were violently taken from us, more than 900 of our fellow americans have reportedly died at the end of a gun. >> reporter: this statement is wrong. the number is much higher. according to the cdc 900 people are murdered on average every month in the u.s. by firearms. but 2,700 are killed by a gun every single month. but here is the caveat. the vast majority of those deaths, about 63%, come from suicide or accidental death. now to widen the scope of this discussion, violent crime over the last 20 years nationally has fallen by a massive amount, 50%. technically america is much safer now statistically than it's been in decades. but controlling the crime rate is not the underlying goal of the president norv congress. it's preventing more newtowns from ever happening again and there is some evidence to suggest a weapons assault ban could achieve that end. i am sam brock and t

states of america. ladies and gentlemen, president barack obama. >> thank you. thank you. thank you. thank you so much. thank you, everybody, please, please have a seat. good afternoon, everybody. let me begin by thanking our vice president, joe biden, for your dedication, joe, to this issue, for bringing so many different voices to the table, because while reducing gun violence is a complicated challenge, protecting our children from harm shouldn't be a divisible. over the month since the tragedy in newtown, we've heard from so many, and obviously none have affected us more than the families of those gorgeous children, and their teachers and guardians who were lost, and so we're grateful to all of you for taking the time to be here and recognizing that we honor their memories in part by doing everything we can to prevent this from happening again. but we also heard from some unexpected people, in particular, i started getting a lot of letters from kids, four of them are here today, grant fritz, julia stokes, hina ziha and teja good. they're pretty representative of some of the mess

of all, michelle obama, first lady of the united states, joined twitter yesterday with the handle @flotis. >> welcome. >> newsbreaking enough. but then her first tweet was a photograph of herself sporting a new do. >> wow! >> so she's got the bang. >> yes. >> first impressions, tamron hall? >> shout out first to her hairstylist from chicago, who i met when i was 18, did my hair when i was 18 in his basement. now he is at the white house. thises what i got. >> only because you look -- blatant attempt at -- oh, i'm so ugly. >> this is why i only visit, i don't stay. no, it worked. thank you. bottom line is she looks hot, very cleopatra. it reminded me, actually, of natalie's bangs. natalie was, i guess, the inspiration. >> carrie washington doing bangs. >> kate middleton, to name a few. also our producer inspired by our first lady of the united states, went in looking like this, this morning, into the offi office. i think we have the before picture. and there's the after. >> makes you mysterious to have bangs. >> that's a compliment. >> for guys you look like mo from the three stooges, but
